The King represent Sir William Cecil who was The Queen’s Chief Advisor. Queen pieces are features Queen Elizabeth I. Bishop has Matthew Parker who was the Archbishop of Canterbury. Knight and Rook represent Sir Walter Raleigh and White Tower of The Tower of London respectively while the pawns are Ships of the English Fleet representation.

At first I was surprised at how large the pieces are — all my previous sets have been *tiny* in comparison. Even my fairly nice wooden set has pieces that are light and will fall over if the table is bumped. Not this set. These pieces feel solid in the hand, don’t wobble when the card table is bumped, and satisfyingly stay in place where you set them. I really enjoy leaving this set out in the living room as I practice various chess lessons.
