The Legend
In ancient times, a magnificent city became the center of a fierce rivalry between two powerful gods: Poseidon, the God of the Sea, and Athena, the Goddess of Wisdom. Both desired the city to bear their name. To resolve the dispute, Zeus decreed that each god must present a gift to the city’s inhabitants. Poseidon struck the rock of the Acropolis with his trident, causing seawater to gush forth. “This will forewarn you of approaching storms, and your city will dominate the seas,” he declared. In contrast, Athena gently touched the ground, bringing forth an olive tree. “For food, oil, wood, and light,” she said, “your city will become a symbol of civilisation.” Despite Poseidon’s fury, the citizens chose Athena’s gift, and the city has been known as Athens ever since.
The Pieces
Greek sculptors frequently depicted this divine rivalry in their works. The King is a replica of the renowned statue “Poseidon of Melos” (2nd century B.C.), while the Queen represents the esteemed “Athena Promachos” (450 B.C., Acropolis Museum). The Bishop draws inspiration from a bronze Hellenistic statue, and the Knight is modelled after a segment of the Parthenon’s marble facade, sculpted by Pheidias. The Rook replicates one of the most admired Attic stelae, dedicated to Aristion, a young warrior who fell in battle. Finally, the Pawn is based on a bronze statue of a fully armoured warrior from 500 B.C.
